Cao de Castro Laboreiro
The Cão de Castro Laboreiro – named after the Portuguese village of Castro Laboreiro – is one of the oldest dog breeds in Europe. For centuries, it has been used to guard people, livestock, and property. Its great strengths: courage, independence, and unwavering vigilance even under challenging conditions.
Traditionally kept on farms in northern Portugal, the Cão de Castro Laboreiro protected houses, cattle, and families – even against wolves. These dogs had to be robust, agile, and intelligent, often working without direct human guidance. From this role developed a resilient guardian with instinctive confidence and a strong mind of its own.
Males typically weigh 30–40 kg and stand up to 64 cm at the shoulder, while females are slightly smaller and lighter. With its family, this breed is affectionate and loyal, but it tends to be reserved with strangers. For a harmonious relationship, it requires respect and clarity – never pressure or harshness.
