Ca de Bestiar

The Ca de Bestiar—also known as the Mallorcan Shepherd Dog—is the traditional farm and guard dog of the Balearic Islands. Depending on the task, it was crossed with larger or more agile breeds: stronger types were used for cattle, lighter ones for sheep and goats. Until the 1930s, the Ca de Bestiar was widespread across the islands—valued for its vigilance and reliability.
After World War II, the breed was nearly displaced by continental dogs. Thanks to the initiative of Alonso Guasp in the 1970s, the original type was preserved—leading to the founding of the “Club del Perro de Pastor Mallorquín.” In 1982, the breed received official FCI recognition. The Ca de Bestiar is considered courageous, loyal, and authentic—bred not for beauty but for function.
Despite its dark coat, the Ca de Bestiar copes well with heat—making it popular even in South America as a farm and guard dog. Deeply loyal to its owner yet often reserved with strangers, this breed is ideal for those seeking a resilient, independent thinker—a steadfast companion with character.
For robust dogs like the Ca de Bestiar, dog blankets with thermo comfort padding are a great choice, creating a warm, protected resting area indoors or on the terrace. For maximum comfort, choose an orthopaedic dog bed—designed for large dogs and providing maximum relief for joints and muscles. Both products are washable at 95 °C, durable, and long-lasting.
When transporting this strong breed, the boot protection cover reliably shields the car interior from scratches, dirt, and hair—featuring a non-slip underside and a perfect fit for large breeds.
