Akita

The origin of the Japanese Akita breed is the subject of many studies – and even more opinions. The name comes from today’s Akita Prefecture near the city of Ōdate. The suffixes “Inu” and “Ken,” once part of the breed name, simply mean: dog.
Some researchers believe that the dogs originally came from the far north, migrating to Japan with nomadic peoples. Early depictions resembling today’s Akita date back to the 23rd century BC – though the exact development remains unclear. What is certain is that these dogs are deeply rooted in Japanese culture.
In 1931, the Akita was declared a “National Monument of Japan.” He is regarded as a proud hunting, guard, and protection dog – with pronounced self-confidence. He is loyal and calm with people, but often territorial toward other dogs.
For life with an Akita, robust and easy-care products are ideal. Doctor Bark offers cozy dog beds in XXL size with removable covers and orthopaedic padding for maximum comfort.
