Fungi – invisible invaders that only true cleanliness can stop
When everyday contact becomes skin contact
Fungal infections are among the most common skin problems in domestic and farm animals. These microscopic organisms settle on the skin and in the coat, producing millions of spores – invisible yet remarkably resilient. They spread through direct contact, grooming tools, blankets, toys or even shared living spaces. And they can pass from animal to human, and from human back to animal.
Visible – but often underestimated
Typical signs of a fungal infection include round, hairless patches on the head, neck or limbs. These areas often appear scaly, reddened and itchy. Once the skin is damaged, bacteria can easily enter – leading to secondary infections that complicate healing.
However, fungal infections don’t always look the same. Depending on the species of fungus, the type of animal and its immune response, symptoms can vary widely. Any pet showing skin irritation should be examined by a veterinarian – both to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out non-infectious skin diseases.
A risk for humans too
Many fungal species – such as Microsporum canis and Trichophyton mentagrophytes – are zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted between animals and humans. In people, infection usually begins with a small, red, itchy spot that gradually expands outward while healing in the centre. If left untreated, multiple lesions may merge, causing widespread irritation. Arms, legs and the face are most often affected.
Treatment by veterinarians or dermatologists – using creams, sprays or tablets – is effective, but recovery can take several weeks or months. During this time, strict hygiene is essential to prevent reinfection.
The hidden danger inside fabrics
Fungal spores cling to hair, skin flakes and body oils, becoming embedded deep within fabric fibres, fillings and seams. There they find warmth, moisture and nutrients – the perfect environment to survive. A standard 30 °C or 40 °C wash does not kill them.
Fungal proteins begin to break down only above 60 °C – and complete inactivation of resistant spores, such as Microsporum or Trichophyton, requires 90–95 °C. These are medical-grade washing temperatures – and that’s what sets Doctor Bark apart from ordinary dog beds.
Doctor Bark – because hygiene means trust
Doctor Bark dog beds, blankets and cushions are fully washable at up to 95 °C – including the filling. This ensures not just surface cleanliness, but complete hygiene throughout the entire product. No chemicals, no residues – just the pure power of water and heat.
This deep-cleaning protection removes fungal spores, yeasts and microbes that can linger in fabrics and cause reinfection. The result: a home that stays hygienically fresh, safe and comfortable for both humans and dogs.
