Saint Bernard

The modern Saint Bernard has little in common with the dog that was known by this name at the beginning of the 19th century. In the Natural History Museum of Bern, you can find an example of this earlier type: Barry – smaller, lighter, and slimmer than today’s Saint Bernards. From around the mid-17th century until 2005, the breed was bred by the monks of the hospice at the Great St. Bernard Pass. The famous “original Saint Bernard” Barry is said to have saved over 40 lives.
Even today, the Saint Bernard is regarded as a reliable rescue and avalanche dog. Despite its imposing stature, with a shoulder height of up to 90 cm, it is gentle, loyal, affectionate, and family-friendly. With its strong protective instinct, it needs close contact with its people and a calm environment. Due to its powerful build, ample space – indoors and outdoors – is an important factor when keeping this breed.
A gentle giant like the Saint Bernard needs the right resting place: Doctor Bark offers orthopaedic dog beds in XL and XXL, specially designed for large dogs. These provide stability, comfort, and optimal hygiene. In addition, large, washable dog blankets create cosy resting areas at home or when lounging outdoors. When travelling, the boot protection cover keeps the vehicle clean, offers a non-slip surface, and can be hygienically washed – ideal for trips with giant breeds.
