Appenzeller Mountain Dog

The Appenzeller Mountain Dog is a traditional Swiss farm dog. Bred alongside local farming practices, he became what he is today – an excellent herder, drover of cattle, and reliable watchdog. To this day, Appenzeller farmers breed their dogs according to practical needs rather than show standards.
The Appenzeller knows every animal in his herd and can gather large groups of scattered cattle. He is weatherproof, intelligent, and alert – and even suitable as a guide dog. His temperament is carefree, and he needs plenty of exercise and meaningful tasks. He is usually very social – friendly with people, including children, and with other dogs.
As an attentive guardian, the Appenzeller tends to bark loudly – but he is not a habitual yapper. He has a quick grasp, is eager to learn, and obeys promptly when guided with the right conviction.
For optimal rest after active days, orthopaedic dog beds with washable padding are ideal. For more flexibility, easy-care, orthopaedic dog cushions provide joint relief and restorative sleep.
